Duration: 8 months (6 features)

Problem

In store associates did not have an easy way to access and manage their financial tools that were available to them through Walmart. Additionally, they were not fully aware of the benefits available to them and the value they hold for their financial well-being. In order to access financial tools and manage their benefits, associates must go through the One Walmart website via VPN. This ultimately limited the time in which these tools were available to them, as the VPN could only be applied to computers within stores.

How might we incorporate financial tools into Me@Walmart, an existing app that combines personal and work needs of over 1.4 million Walmart associates, in order to assist with improving their long term financial well-being by 1) allowing 24/7 access 2) providing learning materials to increase financial awareness, 3) encouraging associates to save for their futures, and 4) allowing associates to take full advantage of their financial benefits available to them through Walmart.

discovery exploration

Before I started at Walmart and on this project, foundational research was conducted to learn about Walmart’s financial ecosystem and the tools available outside of Walmart. Numerous approaches were brainstormed to create a comprehensive solution, offering financial support to internal associates in a straightforward, efficient, and enjoyable manner.

Design documentation

The following artifacts were created and continually referenced to help inform and guide our design process by understanding user needs, behaviors and the overall user journey.

Collaboration

There was constant communication and collaboration every step of the way.

Product

  • It was important to understand product requirements to prevent confusion during design process.

  • We would collectively talk through new or changing requirements in order to always be on the same page as to what was being created.

  • I made sure to highlight specific requirements when presenting designs to keep product engaged and build trust, as this showed intentional design.

  • Product documentation was through confluence.

Tech

  • We made sure Tech was involved during early stages to understand timeline and ensure shared goals of delivering a high-quality product that not only meets user needs but is technically feasible.

  • Tech was present during design reviews to understand functionality and raise potential feasibility concerns.

  • There was cntinuous communication after handoff to answer questions and ensure visual QA.

From iterating to finalizing

Over the course of the project there were multiple iterations made for each feature within the experience. Iterations were based on feedback from design reviews with the team until we finalized designs.
